Project Huia - Tylar

                                          Project Huia
                                     written by Des Hunt

Logan's grandfather (Jim) grew up in Palmerston North in the 1940's. One day he and his sister Mavis spotted a strange but very beautiful bird hanging around by their house in a very native tree. It was a huia bird; witch many people thought was extinct. Before any of them could even get a photo of the very rare huia it shot of within a second and flew away. Jim and his sister managed to keep on following it, leading it deep into the Manawatu gorge. It was very dangerous following the huia; they had to go through a few very tight train track tunnels and a few days later after trying to find it they went out again and it got even more horrible they ran into the two Carson boys that were hoping to find it first so they could shoot it. The Carson boys were planning to sell its feathers that would be very valuable; so they would not give up on this huia. The Carson boys never found it even though they were searching for months so they gave up. More than 50 years later 11 year old Logan came back to Palmerston North with his grandfather and a scientist to try and work out what had happened to the very extinct huia that he and Mavis had found many years ago. They were searching for days and days trying to figure out what had happened to the huia while Jim was telling them all the details he could remember. They searched many places and eventually they found the huia that was partly dead and then took it back to the scientists (Ana's) lab. Ana tried as hard as she could to try and bring the huia (that they had now named Olivia) back to life. Now it is all up to Ana to bring the huia back to life. Project Huia is a book you MUST read and it is recommend for ages 8+. Enjoy Project Huia!!
